What is Virtual Private Networking (VPN)? VPN saves you money and provides security for connecting branch offices and remote users. FreeGate's VPN software transparently and securely interconnects
remote users and branch offices to the corporate LAN using the Internet. Therefore, FreeGate VPN software cost effectively expands reach of your network to provide end users access to central resources at any
time from anywhere. FreeGate VPN software provide two type of services on the OneGate 1000 and OneGate 150: I. Remote Access VPN II. Branch VPN I. Remote Access VPN FreeGate's
Remote Access VPN software enables telecommuters and mobile users with a Windows 95/NT computer to reach other locations you have through local dial-up ISP access thereby saving on long distance charges.
Telecommuter and Mobile users only need to get Microsoft's standard PPTP (point to point tunneling protocol) dial-up software, which is available for free for both Windows 95 and Windows 98.
- Works with all Internet Service Providers (ISP's)
ISPs do not need to install any special software as the link (called a tunnel) is established directly between the end user and the FreeGate system using standard PPP authentication mechanism like PAP and
CHAP. This makes it easy for the ISP to serve you immediately.
- RSA based Standards Encryption
FreeGate's Remote Access VPN software includes robust RC4 encryption licensed from RSA (the defacto standard for security on the Internet) to ensure that all communication between the remote user and the
corporate server is totally secure.
- Integrated with FreeGate's internal Firewall
Using FreeGate's Remote Access VPN software, companies can now cost effectively and securely deploy intranet (internal web) applications and include all remote users. II. Branch VPN FreeGate's
Branch VPN software interconnects multiple FreeGate systems to form a corporate-wide "internal intranet network" using the public Internet as the wide area network that normally would be provided by
long distance service from long distance companies or expensive telephone leased lines.
- Industry Standard Security
Security is implemented using the most widely accepted industry standard IP Security (IPSec) protocol to provide investment protection and interoperability.
- Strong Flexible Encryption
FreeGate's Branch VPN offers a choice of DES, 3DES or RSA's RC2 encryption algorithms.
With FreeGate's Branch VPN, users at branch offices have access to email directories, files and other corporate information as if they were physically at the corporate site.
Common administration framework simplifies management and administration making it easier to deploy Branch VPN within the company. E-mail (standard on OneGate 1000 and OneGate 150) The
FreeGate system includes an email server, which allows every user in your company to have a personal email address to send and receive email within the office and outside to your customers, business partners and
employees. Personalized E-mail address Using the FreeGate system, you can assign personalized email address (like a telephone extension) to every user in your company in the form of username@yourcompany.com. Once that is done,
users can send and receive email to others within the company or to any one outside your company with an Internet accessible email address. Secure E-mail Unlike web-based email solutions,
your inter-company email remains secure, as it does not travel over the Internet. Standards based E-mail services The FreeGate system incorporates industry standard SMTP and POP3 servers which work
with all ISPs, and other SMTP/POP3 compatible servers and clients. It also works with existing mail servers such as Notes and Exchange to act as mail relay. Works with most E-mail clients The
FreeGate system works with any SMTP/POP3 compatible email clients offering your users utmost flexibility in using email clients of their choice. The FreeGate system works with most leading email clients including
the following:
- Microsoft Internet Mail and Outlook

features. Publish files on the Internet (standard on OneGate 1000 and OneGate 150) You can publish public files on the Internet very easily. These files can then be accessed by users on the Internet
with an anonymous FTP command that is available in every browser. Controlled file access (standard on OneGate 1000 and OneGate 150) In the FreeGate system, you can assign someone to be the FTP publisher
who has both read and write privilege while all authorized users on the LAN get Personal FTP privilege wherein they only get read and write privilege for their own files. Drag-and-drop file sharing
(standard on OneGate 1000 and OneGate 150) The FreeGate system supports Microsoft's SMB (server message block) and CIFS (common Internet file system) which allows users to drag and drop any file for sharing
through FTP commands. Therefore, users don't have to learn anything to become FTP publishers. Reporting (standard on OneGate 1000 and OneGate 150) Like in other services, the FreeGate system provides
report on FTP access so that you can use it as an audit trail, if needed. Web Server (standard on models 1000 and 150) The FreeGate system can be used to host an intranet Web site for
disseminating company information such as policies, employee directory and company news. In addition, you can also publish and host your public Internet site on the FreeGate system.
Publishing Internal and External Web sites Once you have created your web site – whether internal or external, you can publish the web site using either FTP or Windows drag-and-drop features. The
FreeGate system allows every user on your LAN to be a web publisher with Personal Web Publisher privilege or Corporate Web Publisher privilege. Pre-built CGI scripts The Common Gateway Interface
(CGI) is a standard that allows external programs and a Web server to interact. To make publishing job easy and secure, FreeGate system provides following CGIs for most common functions:
- Guestbook - Allows users to submit comments about your external Web site.
- Form handler - Allows you to use forms to gather data from visitors to your Web site.
- Web counter - Allows you to add a graphical counter that shows the number of hits a page has received.
- Table of contents - Allows users to use a table of contents to navigate through your Web site.
- Mail forwarding - Collects and formats data entered by users and sends email to a predefined system administrator contact.
- Site search – Allows searching of the site based on keywords.
Reporting The reporting features in the FreeGate system allow you to analyze data on how often specific pages on your Web site are accessed by the public. Web Caching Server
(standard on models 1000 and 150) The FreeGate system includes a web proxy server, which is used for caching the most commonly accessed sites. This reduces the network bandwidth and improves web access
performance for all users on the LAN. DHCP Server (standard on models 1000 and 150) DHCP (dynamic host control protocol) is an industry standard protocol used for dynamically
assigning IP addresses to different computers on the network. The FreeGate system includes a DHCP server so that it can assign IP addresses dynamically to all workstations on the LAN. However, if there is another
DHCP server on the network, the FreeGate DHCP server function can be turned off. DNS Server (standard on models 1000 and 150) DNS (domain name server) is an industry standard server
which maps IP addresses to the domain names. The FreeGate server has a built-in DNS server and can act as both a primary or secondary DNS server. Interoperability
